FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MY KID DOESN'T HAVE ANY ACTING EXPERIENCE. CAN THEY TAKE CLASSES?

You bet. That's the whole reason we are here! At Black Dog we introduce kids to the performing arts, then guide them as they gain more proficiency as performers. We want kids to know that theater is a safe space – a place where they can be themselves and explore their creative expression. We teach theater etiquette, the entire process of putting on shows, how to audition, and everything else they need to know to grow as an actor. If you kid has lots of experience, we'll challenge them and expand their skills and methods.

CAN I STAY AND WATCH?

Black Dog classes are designed to be drop-off classes. We are a small, one-room studio and we use every inch of space during our classes. Kids typically perform better without a grownup in the room...especially our shy students! We have windows across the front of the studio that allow you to see your child at all times and a Dunkin in the plaza if you want to grab a coffee while you wait. That said, if a parent wants to stay for their child's first class to see how we run, we can make an accommodation.

HOW DO YOUR CLASSES WORK?

We run four eight-week sessions throughout the school year, two before winter break and two after winter break. Each session offers a unique set of classes for kids in grades K-9. We do not charge a registration fee to take classes here; you simply pay per class, per session. Most classes are $175 for eight weeks and meet one hour per week.

I MISSED THE START OF A SESSION! CAN WE STILL SIGN UP?

The answer is yes (for most classes)! We will prorate tuition to reflect any missed classes. The exceptions are performance-based classes that require the full session to cast and rehearse.

I DON'T KNOW IF MY KID'S GOING TO LIKE IT. CAN WE DO A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

If you'd like to try out a class, we ask that you register them online using our handy registration form. In the Comments section let us know that you'd like to do a trial. If they enjoy their first class (and they almost ALWAYS do!), simply pay the tuition prior to the second week of class. If they decide it's not their cup of tea, just let us know and you won't owe us anything.

MY KID COULD BE A MODEL. CAN YOU HELP US FIND AN AGENT?

Black Dog is focused on theatrical performance. We do not offer classes or advice on modeling or TV/Movie auditions. While our classes will help kids with self-confidence and acting abilities, we arent't involved with reels, headshots, or referrals.

WHAT IS YOUR POLICY ON EARLY DROP OFFS AND LATE PICKUPS?

Students can be dropped off up to 15 minutes before class starts, and should be picked up promptly when the class ends. If you are repeatedly more than five minutes late picking up your child, you will be charged a $10 late fee, plus $2 per minute. (We understand the occasional traffic jam or emergency – this policy only goes into effect if it happens repeatedly. You will receive a warning before a late fee is levied.)
