FALL 2023 CLASSES - SESSION II

Calling all actors! At Black Dog, kids can express themselves and make friends through acting & improv activities that promote personal expression and social interaction in a welcoming and friendly environment. Our classes are appropriate for beginners hoping to improve their confidence and public speaking skills as well as experienced actors looking to practice their craft and grow as performers. 

Our curriculum changes with each session so each class brings new games, scenes, monologues, and experiences.

 

ACTING & IMPROV FOR HOMESCHOOLERS

Elementary    |   1 Hour   |   Mondays @ 11am   

This class gets your student on stage in a safe, comfortable environment. Our play-based curriculum uses acting games, improv games, short scenes, and movement activities to introduce students to acting. We will learn about all the elements that go into performing, including costumes, set design, creating characters, and performing. This class is great for learning teamwork, focus, and confidence. 

$175 for Eight-Week Session    |    October 9 - December 11 (No class Oct 30 or Nov 20)

 

ACTING I

Grades 2-4   |   1 Hour   |   Mondays @ 4pm   

This is the perfect class for young students to learn all about the art of acting. We learn about character creation, creating scenes with a partner, confidence in performing in front of our peers, and how to focus on memorization and following direction. This class will prepare a new actor for auditions and will help experienced actors get more out of their time on stage. On the last day of class we will perform in a showcase for parents.

ACTING II 

Grades 5-9   |   1 Hour   |   Mondays @ 5pm   

This class dives in deeper to the art of acting for our older students. We will learn how to break down a monologue, how to use our five senses to deepen our understanding of our stage presence, and work on memorizing and presenting duet scenes. This class is appropriate for beginners and actors with onstage experience. On the last day of class we will perform in a showcase for parents.

CABARET WORKSHOP 

Grades 4-9   |   1 Hour   |   Mondays @ 6pm   

Life is a Cabaret! In this workshop we will explore Cabaret, a style of entertainment that typically includes a collection of short performances of music, theater, and dance strung together over the course of the performance. Participants will choose an age-appropriate performance piece. In addition to learning how to write a memorable monologue/introduction, performers will work on interpretation, storytelling, and character development. We will hold in-class auditions for the Cabaret emcee and will perform for friends and family the last night of class at "The Black Dog Club".

IMPROV I 

Grades 2-4   |   1 Hour    |   Tuesdays @ 4pm   

 

Kids will make friends and have fun as we explore the hilarious art of Improv. Each week we'll play different improv games such as Party Quirks, 7 Worlds, and Freeze. We'll learn to project our voices, create meaningful dialogue, and invent interesting characters on the spot. This class helps build confidence and public speaking skills. Each session offers new games and activities to stretch our abilities. We will offer a short showcase the last day of class for parents.

IMPROV II

Grades 5-9   |   1 Hour   |   Tuesdays @ 5pm   

 

Older students will learn the "rules" of improv that will help them grow their skills as their scenes become more fully developed. We'll explore the physicality of creating funny characters and scenes and we'll practice teamwork as we learn to trust our scene partners and work together. Each session offers new games and activities to stretch our abilities. We will offer a short showcase the last day of class for parents. 

$175 for Eight-Week Session    |    October 10 - December 12

 

STORIES ON STAGE

Grades K-1    |    45 Minutes    |   Wednesdays @ 3:30pm   

 

Our youngest actors are introduced to art of story telling and the characters that bring our favorite stories to life. Each week we will explore a different children's book, then tell our own version of the story using costumes, movement, our voices, and teamwork to create art! We also play acting games, learn simple improv games, and explore our imaginations. We will present a showcase of what we've learned for parents on the last day of class.  *Please note this is a drop-off class. Parents are welcome to stay the first class to observe.*

BAK AUDITION PREP - COMMUNICATION ARTS

Grades 4-7   |   1.25 Hour   |   Thursdays @ 3:30pm - 4:45pm 

If your child is interested in auditioning for the Communication Arts program at Bak Middle School of the Arts for the 2024-2025 school year, our prep class taught by Mr. Mark will have them ready to go in January! Mark Fetterly has more than twenty years' experience preparing students across Palm Beach County for their auditions. Students will learn film critique, prepare and memorize a speech, and work on their creative writing skills. 

$195 for Eight-Week Session    |    October 12 - December 14

 

BAK AUDITION PREP - THEATER

Grades 4-7   |   1.25 Hour   |   Thursdays @ 5pm  - 6:15pm 

If your child is interested in auditioning as a theater major for Bak Middle School of the Arts for the 2024-2025 school year, our prep class taught by Mr. Mark will have them more than prepared. Mark Fetterly has more than twenty years' experience preparing students across Palm Beach County for their auditions. Students will learn how to prepare an audition scene with a partner, how to handle cold readings and redirects, and explore the option of auditioning with a musical theater song. 

$195 for Eight-Week Session    |    October 12 - December 14

 

DREYFOOS AUDITION PREP - THEATER & COMMUNICATION ARTS

Grades 8+   |   1.25 Hour   |   Thursdays @ 6:30pm - 7:45pm

For students interested in audition for Dreyfoos High School of the Arts in the areas of Theater or Communication Arts, this personalized class will prepare them for their specific audition requirements. Auditions in the areas of Tech Theater, Acting, Musical Theater, Communication Arts, and Digital Media all require advanced preparation that must be completed prior to their audition date. Each student will have the opportunity to prepare their portfolio pieces for critique by the end of the prep period. This class is taught by Mark Fetterly, the former head of drama at Wellington High School. Mr. Mark has more than twenty years' experience preparing students across Palm Beach County for their auditions.
